What’s the 4-1-1?
Canadian rockers return with their sophomore effort. You may remember
them from their radio hit “(I Hate) Everything About You.”
Genre
Hard rock / melodic rock / modern rock
The Good
The group kicks things of with the steady rocker “It’s All Over.” The
track explored what drugs and alcohol can do to a relationship. The scratchy,
melodic vocals on “Pain” only helps demonstrate the anguish that
the protagonist is going through. The storyline is backed up by some meaty
riffs. Speaking of meaty riffs, I have no doubt that you’ve heard the
infectious riffs of “Animal I’ve Become” on the radio.
The album version is slightly different and a bit longer. It’s still
kick ass. “On My Own” goes down and acoustic road early on, but
picks up the distortion and emotion during the choruses. The anthemic “Riot” will
have you off the floor and pumping your fist with its jarring rhythms and
passion inducing lyrics. Repetitive sentiments and a catchy groove will draw
you in hook, line, and sinker on “Let It Die.” Orchestral elements
really enhance the feel and emotion of the power ballad “Over and Over.”
The Bad
As cool as “Riot” is, as far as anthems goes, it’s a
bit cliché.
The Verdict
This was my first introduction to Three Days Grace. Apparently I’ve
been missing out on a fantastic rock band. Their songs range from chucky
riffed rockers to mid-tempo ballads. The vocals are melodic with just enough
edginess to keep things powerful. The lyrics aren’t too complicated
and are easily identifiable. One-X is a MUST HAVE for all rock fans. My first
nomination for album of the year.
Did You Know?
Three Days Grace was formerly known as Groundswell.
