The Good
The band’s 8th studio album melds their songwriting and playing expertise into a heaping helping serving of progressive rock goodness. The top-notch musicianship is on display throughout the album. “Pilot In The Sky Of Dreams” starts off at a midtempo pace, but increases that pace over the course of the song to the point it hits a very rocking tempo. The guitar work is fantastic particularly on a middle section of the track.

While a lot of progressive music can seem to be content just strolling along at a leisurely pace, I thought Threshold did a great job of varying the pace of the tracks. “Fighting For Breath” and “One Degree Down” each employed a faster, more attacking musical style and McDermott’s vocal performance stood out even more. The two songs that stuck with me the most however where “Hollow” and “Disappear”. The two tracks simply rock the hardest and catch the ear and hold on to it throughout.

The Bad
While I normally like the point-counterpoint vocal style on songs, I did not enjoy the cookie monster death metal growl that accompanied the main vocal on the tracks “Slipstream” and “Elusive.”

The Verdict
I’m a newbie to Threshold, but if the band’s back catalogue is an utterly fantastic as Dead Reckoning, then I am in for a real treat as I investigate the band further. This album is one heck of an example of progressive rock/metal. A phenomenal singer and great instrumental work combine to form a superb collection of songs that will completely thrill fans of the genre and I’m sure will make a few new converts along the way.

Did You Know?
The group’s singer Andrew “Mac” McDermott left the group in July 2007. The band’s former singer Damian Wilson was brought back to fulfill the band’s concert dates for the rest of the year. Nightingale singer Dan Swano appeared on the album on the tracks “Elusive” and “Slipstream”.
