The Good
The album grabs you from the first track to the end. “Chicago” introduces
you to Voegele’s crisp and clear vocals that actually have a nice slight
twang to it in spots. She demonstrates quite a knack for rocking tempos.
What impresses me is the ability to rein in the rock edge enough to let her
fantastic song lyrics shine through. Voegele’s lyrics demonstrate a
storytelling ability that country music writers would be envious of. You
can check out songs like “I Get It”, “One Way Or Another” or “Devil
In Me” for the best examples of this fact.
The mid-tempo tracks like “It’s Only Life”, “I Won’t
Disagree” and “Facing Up” also show Voegele to be have a style
that is evocative of the best singer-songwriters of the 70‘s & 80’s.
The Bad
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with this album.
The Verdict
I guess you have to figure that Myspace Records has found a perfect
artist to make an initial impression on me. Kate Voegele is a whip-smart
powerful vocalist who knows how to combine a rocking vibe without
sacrificing a necessary sense of melody. The lyrics are quite strong
throughout the disc and the overall song writing ability is a wonder
to behold from someone just into her 20’s.
First it was Starbucks
and their Hear Music Now with the superb Antigone Rising album and
now Myspace gets in on the album release party and hits a home run
out of the box. How often can you expect a college student to release her very
first album and have it contain 13 superb songs? This is an album that not
only impresses the heck out of me; it could very well be one of the albums
of the
year. 13 songs, All Killer…No Filler!
Did You Know?
Kate Voegele has been cast in the recurring role of “Mia” on
the 2007-2008 season of the CW network series One Tree Hill. She will perform
5 or 6 of the songs on this disc during the course of her stay on the show.
