What’s the 4-1-1?
Hollywood quartet delivers their debut album.
Genre
Rock / pop-rock
The Good
“Follow” has a drum beat that will have you bouncing your head
instantly. Added to that is percussive effects and commanding melodic vocals
courtesy of Robb Vallier. “Disaster Fiend” is full of driving
rhythms and pulsing keyboards. “Ultra Violet” infuses some interesting
and unique instruments into its background. The chorus is delivered smooth
and harmonic. “Ghost (Inside My Head)” is another track that
digs deep into the unique instruments closet with its use of a Mellotron
to set the eerie mood. Vallier stays melodic with his delivery, but comes
off a little creepy with his low, echoed tones. “Throwaway” has
a fell-good pop-rock feel to it; sort of a Hanson-esque quality. Energy is
kicked into high gear on “While You Were Sleeping.” The riffs
and rhythms are sure to draw you in. “I Wonder” reminds me of
a lost Butch Walker ditty.
The Bad
Nothing notable
The Verdict
Grandville aren’t afraid to stick their necks out there and take chances
musically. Fortunately for them, whether their kicking it old school glam,
melodic power-pop, or straight up rock; the group wins the gold in the Olympics
of indie rock. Grandville are “grand” indeed.
Did You Know?
“While You Were Sleeping” was used in the Olsen Twin’s
movie Passport to Paris. But don’t let that deter you.
