The Good
Motley Crue bassist Nikki Sixx wrote a book about his life and struggles with drugs entitled The Heroine Diaries. In a unique marking tie in, he formed a new band to create a soundtrack for it. The album mixes passages from the book read by Nikki, with music no-doubt inspired by the story. Our story begins in 1986 at Christmas time. “X-Mas in Hell” twists a holiday classic with a section read from the book. The dark track “Van Nuys” would have you believe that whole town/city is drug addicts.

“Life is Beautiful” is the lead single from the album and has a great hard rock crunch and emotional chorus to it. “Pray for Me” is most likely about Sixx’s failed marriage with Donna D’Errico (or Brandi Brandt). He laments on how she tried to help him, but he only hated her for it. “Dead Man’s Ballet” delves into Sixx’s near-death experience as he regrets leaving loved ones behind but spits venom at his father. The track runs the gamut on emotions and tempos.

The Bad
The album is probably better understood after reading the book. Trying to profit from stupid, irresponsible, and dangerous life choices is just wrong.

The Verdict
While The Heroin Diaries Soundtrack is hands-down Nikki Sixx’s best non-Motley Crue music project, I simply cannot endorse anyone that glamorizes a lifestyle of drug abuse. Sixx can hide behind the claim he wants to help people so they don’t make mistakes like he did, but in reality, people will feel that they too can survive a lifetime of drug abuse and may even come out a millionaire or celebrity because of it. Sixx should not be rewarded or idolized for his past behavior. There are thousands if not millions in the gutter or even dead because of heroine abuse. I have no sympathy.

Did You Know?
Nikki Sixx’s mother was a singer in Frank Sinatra’s band.
