The Good
At first listen, "Worlds Collide" is your typical progressive metal
instrumental track. Once you realize it's just three cellos and a drum kit
playing (that's
right, no guitars), you'll be blown away. "I'm Not Jesus" features
Corey Taylor of Slipknot on vocals. The track is driven by deep-bass tones
and
driving drums. The track sounds more like Taylor's second group Stone Sour.
You'd swear muted picking dominates "Ion," but you'll need to
remind yourself there's no guitars. the group does add the orchestral elements
by playing
their instruments classically at times.
There's no argument that Rammstein's
lead singer appears on "Helden." It's no so much that the vocals
are in German, but his intense vocals are quite distinguishable. Apocalyptica
decided
to kick the energy up to eleven with one of metals most intense drummers
(Slayer's Dave Lombardo) on "Last Hope." You might think it's
a little out of left field to include Three Days Grace vocalist Adam
Gontier on
"I Don't Care," but the gritty vocalist holds his own with
his metal counterparts. Lacuna Coil vocalist Cristina Scabbia adds some
serenity to
the mix with
her performance on "S.O.S. (Anything But Love)."
The Bad
Nothing
The Verdict
If it were just an instrumental album, Worlds Collide would probably fail.
With the addition of some prominent names in the metal community, Worlds
Collide delivers a great mix of progressive metal instrumentals with memorable
metal vocal tracks. Did I mention the power is provided by three cellos?
