5 Questions with...

Zachary Stevens of Circle II Circle

1. Your latest album Burden of Truth (read CD review) was inspired by Dan Brown’s The DaVinci Code...

a.) What made you want to go this route with your songwriting?
-- We've been intrigued by the various theories presented in the books Holy Blood, Holy Grail and The DaVinci Code for years. The timing just seemed to be right to go ahead and take on this type of record. The record's story line is like a musical sequel, if you will, to The DaVinci Code book/movie.

b.) Did you have any help from your former Savatage band mates (as with previous albums)?
-- Burden of Truth was written entirely within the band. We felt that it was time for our guys to showcase their writing talents on this record, and we were all very excited about the outcome.

2. If I were to buy the new album, what songs should I pay particular attention to and why? (You can’t say all of them)
-- I would recommend "Revelations," "Live as One," "Heal You," "Messiah," and "Matter of Time" to name a few. These are pivotal songs in the story that provide a real musical twist.

3. I’m sure you did a fair amount a research during the songwriting process, so I have to ask; The DaVinci Code – fact or fiction?
-- There are lots of viable theories that would have one believing it is truth. However we may never know because something like this that so dramatically goes against the grain of modern societal belief would surely be suppressed by money, religion, and power.

4. The last time we talked you mentioned that a Circle II Circle DVD was in the works...

a.) What is the current status of the DVD?
-- The DVD is in the production and editing stage, so we hope to have it out by early 2007.

b.) What is going to be on it?
-- It will contain live concert footage, various dialog with band members and other bands we've toured with, and some historical footage documenting the history of CIIC to date.

5. What was your worst on stage experience? What was your best?
-- In '96, Savatage played a radio station's festival in Tampa on the Dead Winter Dead album. During the opening song, the front-of-house PA system shut down and we had to wait until it came back up and then start the song over! It's bound to happen when you play a lot of venues, but that's never what you'd like to happen!

There have been a lot of great shows with both Savatage and CIIC, so that's a tough question. These days CIIC strives to make every show our best and we keep getting better with every show, especially as of late.
