What’s the 4-1-1?
Queen recorded and released their self-titled debut album in 1973. Even
though Queen's debut album does sound different from what would follow
in the years to come, it is still one of the most excellent rock albums
of the seventies. The band had already assembled the lineup they would
use on all of their albums, and from the beginning, they had a diverse
sound. Many band's debut albums are a cry for help that they need a sound
all their own, but not Queen. The album is packed full of hard rockers
("Keep Yourself Alive," "Great King Rat"), soft and melodic tunes ("Doing
All Right," "My Fairy King"), and everything in between.
Diversity was a strength
on every Queen album, and this was true of the band from day one. Although
none of these tracks became very big hits for the band, they are all
excellent and hint at the band's future success.
The only complaints I have are with two of the songs. The short, incomplete
instrumental version of "Seven Seas Of Rhye" is pointless, considering
a completed version appeared on the next album. The other track I have issues
with is "Modern Times Rock And Roll." The song is way too short, which
is
a shame, because it had serious potential. But in the big picture, the
complaints are minimal.
The Verdict
Queen rocked from day one, and their debut is all the proof you need.
If you're into classic rock and/or hard rock, or maybe you're just
a Queen fan who want to see what the band sounded like from day one,
don't hesitate to pick up the band's first album!
Did You Know?
Prior to Queen, Freddie Mercury played in a band called Larry Lurex. Brian
May was in a band called Smile. "Doing All Right" was actually written by
Brian May and a former Smile bandmate.
