2005 GRAMMY AWARD PREDICTIONS
by George Dionne
As far as predicting the Grammy winners are concerned, I clearly suck. Of
all I said will win, 6 out of 20 were correct. Of all I said should win,
7 actually won. I forgot to predict that last one. I must say I was surprised
that Kanye West, Mariah Carey, and Gwen Stefani were shut out of the big
awards,
not
that
I'm disappointed. I was surprised that Slipknot came out a winner, but it
was cool that they accepted with their masks on. Winners are in BOLD. I clearly
have no idea who Ciara is.
The 48th Annual Grammy Awards will be handed out on February 8, 2006.
Whether you know it or not, the winners are voted on by people in the music
industry. In other words, it's not exactly the best selling album that wins,
but more like the artist with the most friends (like your high school class
President). As is the case every year, the one you want to win, almost never
does. I'm going to take a stab at who I think will be the winners in the
most popular categories. I don't claim to be an expert on this, so don't
nail me on it.
*Who should win
*Who will win Record Of The Year
We Belong Together -
Mariah Carey
Feel Good Inc. - Gorillaz Featuring De La Soul
Boulevard Of Broken Dreams - Green Day
Hollaback Girl - Gwen Stefani
Gold Digger - Kanye West
The Grammy's love a comeback. so look for the now stable Mariah to reel
a few trophies in. Between songwriters, engineers, producers and whatnot,
both
Mariah and
Gwen had twenty people each put their albums together. You would think with
that many people, they'd have enough insiders to vote.
Album Of The Year
The Emancipation Of Mimi - Mariah Carey
Chaos And Creation In The Backyard
- Paul McCartney
Love. Angel. Music. Baby. - Gwen Stefani
How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb - U2
Late Registration - Kanye West
What happened to Green Day? It's rare that the same artist will win best
album and best record. How can U2 lose?
Song Of The Year
Bless
The Broken Road - Rascal Flatts
Devils & Dust - Bruce Springsteen
Ordinary People - John Legend
Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own -
U2
We Belong Together - Mariah Carey
No less than ten people wrote this song. That has
to account for something. U2 could sneak in there, but I doubt it. Best New Artist
Ciara
Fall Out Boy
Keane
John Legend
SugarLand
Also known as the "kiss of death award," since those who
have one it tend to fall off the face of the Earth. I can't believe
this is
the best I have to choose from. I'm giving this
one
to Ciara
because
A.)
Her milkshake brings me to the floor B.) Her song is the only one I
know----although the "legit" critics dig Fall Out Boy.
Best
Female Pop Vocal Performance
It's Like That - Mariah Carey
Since U Been Gone - Kelly Clarkson
Good Is Good - Sheryl Crow
I Will Not Be Broken - Bonnie Raitt
Hollaback Girl - Gwen Stefani
Clarkson has a better shot at the American Music Awards or the Billboard
Awards I'm afraid. Raitt's going to win because she's the least logical
to win, and the Grammy's love to to that.
Best Male Pop Vocal Performance
Sitting, Waiting, Wishing - Jack Johnson
Fine Line - Paul McCartney
Walk On By - Seal
Lonely No More - Rob Thomas
From The Bottom Of My Heart - Stevie Wonder
Seal had a new song this past year? The only guys here that can actually
still carry a tune are Johnson & Wonder. Jack's too young to steal this
one from Stevie.
Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal
Don't Lie - The Black Eyed Peas
Mr. Brightside - The Killers
More Than Love - Lonely Boys
This Love - Maroon 5
My Doorbell - The White Stripes
Did you notice there's only one rap group here?
I would say that Maroon 5 have the best shot, but that particular
section was from a live album. Mr. Brightside was a poppy rock song,
that's pretty catch after a while.
Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals
Gone Going - The Black Eyed Peas & Jack
Johnson
Virginia Moon - Foo Fighters Featuring Norah Jones
Feel Good Inc. - Gorillaz Featuring De La Soul
A Song For You - Herbie Hancock Featuring Christina Aguilera
A Time To Love - Stevie Wonder Featuring India.Arie
When I first heard the Foo Fighters track, I knew that was their Grammy
bid. Not the best thing they've done though. I wonder what that Herbie
Hancock collaboration sounded like. The press has been pushing the
Gorillaz like crazy, look for them to trump Wonder. I'm sure Johnson
would just love to win this one instead of Best Male Pop Vocal.
Best Pop Instrumental Performance
In Our Time - Burt Bacharach & Chris
Botti
T-Jam - George Duke
Gelo Na Montanha - Herbie Hancock Featuring Trey Anastasio
Agave - Daniel Lanois
Caravan - Les Paul
Les is still rocking out at 80, and I think Bacharach is right around
there too. I think Burt has the edge here though. He's more contemporary.
Best Pop Instrumental Album
At This Time - Burt Bacharach
Bloom - Eric Johnson
Naked Guitar - Earl Klugh
Belladonna - Daniel Lanois
Flipside - Jeff Lorber
Bloom is Eric Johnson's best album yet. It's
has a little bit of everything. Bacharach has more name recognition
though.
Best Pop Vocal Album Extraordinary Machine - Fiona Apple
Breakaway - Kelly Clarkson
Wildflower - Sheryl Crow
Chaos And Creation In The Backyard - Paul McCartney
Love. Angel. Music. Baby. - Gwen Stefani
Isn't this the same Fiona Apple record that her label refused to put
out because it sucked? Then when they put it out, it still didn't do
that well. Clarkson is the only true vocalist in the bunch, but the
industry has a lot of artsy people that dig Fiona.
Best Traditional
Pop Vocal Album
The Art Of Romance - Tony Bennett
It's Time - Michael Bublé
Isn't It Romantic - Johnny Mathis
Moonlight Serenade - Carly Simon
The Great American Songbook Volume IV - Rod Stewart
Could also be called the "old timers award," which pretty
much eliminates Bublé from winning. Tony Bennett's got the track
record, but Stewart's been playing up this Songbook angle to record
sales & accolades (though
he sounds horrible live).
Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance
Revolution - Eric Clapton
Shine It All Around - Robert Plant
Devils & Dust - Bruce Springsteen
This Is How A Heart Breaks - Rob Thomas
The Painter - Neil Young
The Clapton album was horrible, and the Young album was mediocre.
Rob Thomas isn't even in the same league as the rest of the pack. I
hate to sound crass, cruel, or rude (that's not my intention), but
Young will get the sympathy vote due to the aneurysm he suffered while
making
the
album.
Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal
Speed Of Sound - Coldplay
Best Of You - Foo Fighters
Do You Want To - Franz Ferdinand
All These Things That I've Done - The Killers
Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own - U2
How did Franz Ferdinand get in this category? Moreover, how does
U2 get in both the Pop & Rock categories? I don't care for Coldplay
personally, but a lot of people did them. Ferdinand is the least
likely nominee, so they'll come out on top.
Best Hard Rock Performance
Doesn't Remind Me - Audioslave
The Hand That Feeds - Nine Inch Nails
Tin Pan Valley - Robert Plant
Little Sister - Queens Of The Stone Age
B.Y.O.B. - System Of A Down
Plant has history on his side, but System of
a Down has all the critics.
Best Metal Performance The Great Satan - Ministry
Determined - Mudvayne
Mein Teil - Rammstein
What Drives The Weak - Shadows Fall
Before I Forget - Slipknot
The Grammy's tend get this one wrong (with a few exceptions), and
I know they're bound to do it again. Shadows Fall had the best album
out of the bunch, but Mudvayne was the only one put out on a major
label.
Best Rock Instrumental Performance
Beat Box Guitar - Adrian Belew
Birds Of Prey - Stewart Copeland
69 Freedom Special - Les
Paul & Friends
Mercy - Joe Perry
Lotus Feet - Steve Vai
The Vai & Perry albums were real let downs,
yet somehow Vai get nominated for every album he puts out. I bet
he performs too. I didn't even know Copeland put out a new album
last year.
Best Rock Song
Best Of You - Foo Fighters
Beverly Hills - Weezer
City Of Blinding Lights - U2
Devils & Dust - Bruce Springsteen
Speed Of Sound - Coldplay
There aren't many words to Best of You, and Beverly Hills isn't exactly
Shakespeare. The song structure isn't very complex either. Gotta go
with U2 because they embrace the industry more than Springsteen.
Best Rock Album X&Y
- Coldplay
In Your Honor - Foo Fighters
A Bigger Bang - The Rolling Stones
How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb - U2
Prairie Wind - Neil Young
The Rolling Stones put out their best
album in the last twenty years, but no one will care. Coldplay
will inch out Young in this category, he's already going home
with one.
Best Alternative Music Album
Funeral - The Arcade Fire
Guero - Beck
Plans - Death Cab For Cutie
You Could Have It So Much Better - Franz Ferdinand
Get Behind Me Satan - The
White Stripes
For some reason Franz Ferdinand is both rock and alternative. I
don't think they're either, but that's just me. I have no clue who
The Arcade Fire is, but is the voters do, they'll probably win.
