MUSIC SKINS PRODUCT REVIEW
by George Dionne

Overview:

Music Skins (www.music-skins.com) are adhesive covers for electronic devices. They are made made from premium grade 3M vinyl and adhesive technology so they apply easily and remove without leaving any residue. The skins are made with high gloss over laminate, which adds durability and a photo quality finish to the skins. A variety of skins are available in various music categories as well as models, fashion, and art. Music Skins can cover your:

Ipod (most sizes)
iPhone
Cell Phone (most popular models)
Mp3 Player (select models)
Rock Band / Guitar Hero Guitar Controller
Blackberry
PSP
Nintendo DS

Review:

This is not really a product that we cover, but the good folks at Music Skins sent us over some test products, so I figured what the hell.

17" Laptop Skin

Yeah, I know, kind of girly, but it was for my wife's laptop. The application was REALLY EASY. Easy once I read the directions. You apply from the middle and work your way out. I started from the edge and kept getting air bubbles or misalignment. However, even though I had to re-apply, there was no residue or problems re-sticking the skin back down. I actually did it three times before realizing what I was doing wrong. It's stuck on perfect now. It doesn't peel away at the edges. Their claims are in fact true.

5th Generation iPod Skin

This one, was not so easy. It takes quite some time to get this one on perfect. That's not so much a fault of Music Skins, but really the design of the iPod. It took forever to line it up around the iPod screen. You almost need to be an engineer to get it right. Once you get that down, then comes the dreaded control wheel. The big wheel is somewhat easy, but the little wheel is a bit of a bitch.

Now, one that's finished, you have a great looking iPod. The skin is so thin, it does not effect you ability to dock your iPod in any devise. The skin is threaded and durable (just like the laptop version), so it protects your iPod. Although if your someone that drops your iPod a lot, you can't expect a miracle.

Final Thoughts:

For the most part, I loved these products. Easy application for the most part, and if you get sick of one style, you can replace with another without residue or tearing of any kind.

The only downside I see is that the company has yet to build up a decent roster of music acts. Coheed and Cambria is one of their exclusive artists. Which is a fairly big act, but still an indie band. Most of 40 rock bands that Music Skins offers are independent acts. There are some classic groups, but no one really huge.

The selection of art, fashion, and models more than makes up for the lack of music artists. Although I have never used competitors skins to make a great comparison, I would say they have a lot to live up to in order to compete with Music Skins durability, ease of application, and ability to apply re-apply and replace with no fuss, muss, or mess.
